Description

Selling our barn find 1971 AMC Javelin SST survivor car.The Javelin was put up in Oregon in 1988 with 41,000 original miles and put back on the road in late 2013.My son and I spent 5 months going through and rebuilding all of the systems and he's been driving it daily to school. All of the VIN, paint and trim codes match what is on the vehicle. It looks like a true survivor car. Even the ball joints had the original rivets instead of bolts. We also have the original owners card and Oregon plates showing the 1988 inspection stickers. The following is a partial list of what we did to the vehicle.
- Pulled oil pan and replaced rear main seal and pan gasket
- Rebuilt carburetor
- Rebuilt radiator
- New oil pump gasket
- New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points
- Pressure tested and cleaned ac and heater cores & lines
- Rebuilt AC and heater boxes which entailed pulling units from car, glass beaded and painted all parts, new seals, foam and rivets.
- New brake cylinders on all 4 wheels
- New brake master cylinder
- New ball joints
- New alternator
- New water pump
- New hood insulation, clips and bumpers
- New door strikers
- New felt window sweeps
- New window, trunk and door rubber
- New belts
- New AC Compressor & expansion valve
- New suspension rubber on front and rear suspension
- Differential cover removed, checked gears and replaced fluid and gasket
- Transmission pan removed, replaced filter and replaced gasket
- Flushed brake lines
We also replaced just about everything that was rubber on the car, pulled and cleaned every light socket and electrical component, replaced all belts, replaced cardboard package tray and trunk divider, new trunk mat The entire front and rear suspension was pulled from the car, checked and put back together with new bushings. The entire interior was pulled, window regulators cleaned, lubricated and reinstalled. The plastic on the car is in incredible condition for being 44 yrs old. The grill looks new.
There is an original AMX trunk and spoiler currently installed on the car.The original rust free trunk is included.
The engine is a 304V8 2BBl mated to a 3 speed automatic transmission. The brakes are hydraulic drums which all work excellent. We put in 3 new speakers and a hidden iPOD doc for my son.The original 8 track/AM radio is in the car but not working. The car also has tilt steering and the desirable center console with padded arm rest.
The car currently has 43,100 miles on it.We had a great car to start with but wanted to go through it and make it safe and reliable for my son. We probably have $3000 in parts and material in the rebuild plus many, many man weeks of labor. In addition to the trunk lid, we also have the original rebuildable Motorola alternator and the original water pump which had a bad bearing. Even if you find an original car like this with low miles, it takes a lot of work to make them reliable, daily drivers.
What needs work?
- The fuel gauge reads about 1/4 tank low and the clock runs slow.
- The heater control valve was rebuilt but recently started dripping again.I'm currently looking for a NOS valve to replace it.
- The car was repainted back in the 80's the original electric blue. It's not the greatest paint job but the car draws a crowd everywhere it goes.
- The passenger side windshield pillar plastic is very brittle and has a hole in it which is normal with these cars.
I have the Javelin for sale locally and reserve the right to cancel the auction at any time. I also have a 1972 Z code, 401V8, Triple Black, AMX that I'm going to sell. It's got everything including AC, fiberglass ram air hood, Trendsetter dual exhaust, ect. The car came out of California but needs a lot of TLC to bring it up to the shape of our SST..
